The New Buell 1125r Demo Ride
Page 2
I recently decided to take the 1125r for a test ride.  Keep in mind that I haven't cared for Buell designs since Harley Davidson bought them out.  I was actually looking forward to it as all the materials I had gone over made it sound like it was going to be a great machine.  Not to mention a friend of mine talked me into taking it out as he is unable to ride one due to knee surgery.  Since everything we have been seeing is track usage, how about real world type usage?

I went to the local Harley dealership and figured I would get a good look at the bike.  I still have a hard time with the width of the fairing and the air ducts but when you're riding they make sense.  The shifter and the rear brake are adjustable for those of us with big feet which is also handy.  I'll spare you the rest of the appearance type information as you can have a look for yourself if you haven't already.

Sitting in the saddle it was surprisingly comfortable for a sport bike.  I'm a tall guy (6 foot even) and I sometimes feel a little cramped when I'm on a sport bike.  I seemed to have a little bit more of a knee bend sitting on the Ulysses than on the 1125r which is rather surprising.  One other thing of interest that I noted while sitting was that the fairing gave me good visuals that you don't normally get from a sport bike.  The screen actually goes all the way down to the front rather than cutting off halfway.  Not to mention a rather clear view straight down the forks.

Unfortunately, I didn't really get to put the bike through it's paces as I was following a guy on an FLH and apparently a rather new riders as well which was VERY disappointing but I did get an overall  feel for the bike.  While pulling out of the alley and onto the main street the first thing I noticed was it didn't like low speed turns.  What should have been a rather simple 90 degree turn in 5 feet turned into crossing out into the second lane and thinking to myself "wow, am I in control of a battleship?"  I chalked it up to "Not my KLR, dumbass" and moved on.

Going up a 40 degree incline hill directly after leaving the dealership I did get to test out the torque curve a little bit.  I have to say that the engine completely surprised me!  Great power all the way through the revs.  The power is there, on tap at any time.  While I did feel that the machine is a little overstated on how much horsepower it has (sure didn't feel like 140+ to me anyway) it certainly can give it to you at any time you ask for it with it's really flat torque curve.

So as we're heading out of town I experience the brakes and clutch a little bit.  The brakes are what you would expect on a sport bike, easily capable of standing the bike up on it's nose and the feeling you get from the bike under braking is completely smooth.
